In the wake of Soulik, Typhoon Cimaron will threaten mainland Japan with damaging winds and flooding rainfall in the coming days.

While Soulik bypassed mainland Japan to the south, T yphoon Cimaron is expected to make landfall in southern mainland Japan late Thursday afternoon or Thursday night, local time.

Shikoku and southern Honshu will be at the greatest risk as the cyclone tracks over the region before entering the Sea of Japan of on Friday.

Cimaron is currently the equivalent strength of a Category 2 hurricane in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific basins.

Cimaron 8/22

Cimaron is expected to maintain its category intensity until landfall bringing the risk for widespread damaging wind.

Power outages are expected, and some areas may be without power for several days. Roadways may be imp assible due to downed trees.

The tropical cyclone will also bring the risk for inundating storm surge, flooding rainfall and mudslides.

While southern Japan has had time to dry out in the wake of the extreme rain event from early July, mudslides can easily be triggered where the ground remains unstable or lacks thick vegetation.

The extensive cleanup and recovery work done by residents and crews in the flood disaster areas could be reversed should Cimaron target these areas with another round of flooding and mudslides.

Residents are strongly urged to pay attention to local officials and to follow any evacuation orders that are issued as the storm approaches.

Once Cimaron crosses southern Japan, a turn to the northeast is expected which will then bring a bout of heavy rain to Hokkaido from late Friday into Saturday.

Drier weather will prevail across Japan from Sunday into early next week; however, the west Pacific is expected to remain active into September bringing additional risks for flooding and damaging winds to Japan.
