Japan's industrial output slows in September

Japan's industrial output in September fell for the first time in 2 months due to disruption from powerful typhoons that tore through western Japan and an earthquake which hit the northern area.

The economy and industry ministry said in a preliminary report on Wednesday that the index for September stood at 101.4 against a reference value of 100 in 2010, down 1.1 percent from the previous month.

The drop is attributed in part to a typhoon that shut down Kansai Airport and a major earthquake that triggered a massive blackout in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido.

The disasters stalled manufacturing of passenger vehicles, automobile parts and chip-making equipment.

The manufacturing industry is expected to rebound with a 6 percent output increase in October, but is forecast to post a 0.8 percent fall in November.

The ministry says production will probably recover from the impact of the disasters, but overall output is unlikely to change significantly toward the year-end due to an absence of factors to boost growth.
